Murray Smedley
Managing Director

Murray holds a BSc in Chemistry & Biology. Prior to forming Barkwith Associates in 2002 he held technical positions in both agricultural and retail businesses. A qualified Agronomist, he has been involved in chemical regulatory support for over 25 years and includes client liaison and project management within his role.

He participates in many Industry initiatives and working groups, chairing several, and is actively involved in providing feedback and opinion to Regulators.

As Managing Director, Murray welcomes the opportunity to introduce our pragmatic approach and services to new clients.

John Parkes
Director of Business Development

John is a Ph.D. Qualified Biochemist & Molecular Biologist with a long track record in scientific business development working for several of the world’s largest CRO’s in the areas of pharmaceutical, chemical, biocide and agrochemical safety assessment.

John has a good understanding of the various Regulations and welcomes the opportunity to work with our clients on larger more complex project requiring multiple areas of support.

John joined Barkwith Associates in 2020 as Director of Business Development.

Nikki Simpson
Director & Company Secretary

Nikki has over 20 years of experience in administration, accounting, and personal assistance.

Having been with the company for 12 years she plays a pivotal role as Director, overseeing operations as Office Manager, Company Secretary, and HR Lead. Holding a Diploma in HR, Payroll, and Bookkeeping, she is also responsible for managing accounting and administrative functions, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation.

Plant Protection Team

Russell Froggatt
Regulatory Affairs Lead

Russell holds a BSc in Ecology and joined the Company in 2009. He leads our Plant Protection support services and is responsible for the compilation, writing & submission of dossiers at GB, Member States and EU.

Russ specialises in tier 1 risk assessments and commissioning of external studies. His experiences also provide advice on a wide range of other chemical regulatory compliances.

In his role as Regulatory Affairs Lead, Russ works closely with clients and in our task force projects.

Katalin Bokán
Regulatory Affairs Specialist

Katalin has a PhD in Environmental Sciences and 8 years’ experience in the field of regulatory affairs, specializing in Ecotoxicology. Having worked in Industry, Competent Authorities and most recently Consultancy, her experiences include PPP & PCN Dossier preparation, client support and project management.

Katalin joined our Plant Protection team in 2022, providing a range of support services for Registrations in both GB & EU. Her local knowledge is of particular value for submissions to EEU Member States.

Kirsty Fraser
Regulatory Affairs Consultant

Kirsty is a PhD qualified Plant Pathologist. She has had 2 years’ experience as a study director, where she specialised in conducting efficacy and safety field trials for a variety of plant protection products and biostimulants.   

Kirsty joined Barkwith’s Plant Protection team in 2023 as a Regulatory Affairs Consultant and her primary focus is on Regulatory Efficacy work, from GAP analysis to writing Biological Assessment Dossiers.

Faye Barnard
Regulatory Affairs Specialist

Faye has a PhD in Molecular Microbiology and brings 10 years’ specialist experience working in CROs and Industry (latterly at UPL-Arysta). She specialises in preparing BADs, dRRs and Comparative Assessments for new and renewal submissions in a wide range of conventional and biological compounds in addition to technical documents for biostimulants and other biological products.

Joining the team as Regulatory Affairs Specialist in 2021, Faye’s primary focus is Regulatory Efficacy work.

Michelle Matkin

Michelle holds a BSc Crop Production & Crop Protection. She is BASIS qualified and is a practicing Agronomist on the family farm. She has many years’ experience in pan-European regulatory trials work and specialises in all aspects of field crop planning, efficacy & safety including Comparative Assessment and writing Biological Assessment Dossiers.

Michelle has been a member of the Barkwith Associates team since 2012 as Regulatory Affairs Specialist.

Biocides Team

Lauren Hypson
Biocides Regulatory Manager

Lauren holds a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and has extensive experience in regulatory affairs across government, industry, and consultancy. She began her regulatory career in 2016 at the UK Health and Safety Executive, focusing on operator and human exposure assessments for plant protection and biocides. She also contributed to high-level Brexit regulatory discussions. Lauren later worked in industry with a biocides manufacturer and spent five years in consultancy, specialising in Biocides Regulatory Affairs, Compliance, and Strategic Planning across UK and EU markets. In 2025, she joined the Barkwith Group as Biocides Regulatory Manager.

Ellie Campbell
Senior Biocides Regulatory Affairs Specialist

Ellie has a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Leicester, before moving into new product development as a lab chemist and project manager for a wide range of products. After working in the biocides sector and consultancy for several years working on biocidal product submissions, regulatory strategy and compliance requirements covering UK, EU, USA, as well as parts of South America and Asia. Ellie joined in 2026 as a Senior Regulatory Affairs Specialist for Biocides, specialising in regulatory strategy and compliance, technical requirements for submissions and project management.

Ági has a degree in Earth Sciences and 2 years' experience in the field of regulatory affairs, specializing in the compliance of biocidal products, Poison Centre Notifications and local EU Laws for Home Care products.

Ági joined our team in 2023 as Regulatory Affairs Consultant and works alongside Lauren Hypson in supporting our services for Biocides & Biocidal Products.

Emmanuelle Jullian

Emmanuelle has an MSc in Agronomy and a PA1 and BASIS Foundation Award in Agronomy. From 2016, she was a regulatory efficacy expert and specialised in Biological Assessment Dossiers (BADs), dRRs and Comparative Assessments preparation for new and renewal submissions for both conventional and biological products.

Emmanuelle joined Barkwith Associates in 2024 to support Regulatory compliance for fertilisers and biostimulants under both the EU Fertiliser Product Regulation [FPR] and National Laws.

Toxicology

Rachel Tilley
Senior Toxicologist

Rachel holds a BSc in Toxicology and PgCert in Forensic Science, with over 27 years’ experience across a wide range of industry sectors.

At Barkwith, she provides toxicology expertise across REACH, CLP, BPR and PPP, specialising in skin sensitisation, eye damage, genotoxicity, acute toxicity, DART, neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. Her expertise include data interpretation, literature assessment, IUCLID dossiers, data gap analysis and Integrated Testing Strategies. Rachel combines strong scientific expertise with a proactive, collaborative approach to deliver practical, robust regulatory solutions tailored to clients’ needs.

CLP & Product Labelling

Helen Strange
Classification & Labelling Manager

Helen holds a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Following graduation, she gained over 15 years of experience working in microbiology and chemistry laboratories.

Previously, she has worked as a Chemical Regulatory Consultant specialising in CLP Regulation, with practical experience in Poison Centre Notifications and SDS authoring. She is also the deputy presenter for the CHCS module on Poison Centre Notification.

As the Classification & Labelling Manager, Helen ensures ongoing compliance with CLP and REACH regulations through SDS authoring and Poison Centre Notifications for clients.
